Widows Project
Here we can see some of our deserving widows receiving their goat herd.
We are delighted to report that our Widows Livelihood Project is continuing with great success, and over the past 3 years we have provided 860 goats to 172 deserving widows, making a significant impact on their lives and their family, who are among the most vulnerable members of society. The initiative is designed to address the economic hardships faced by these families by providing them with a sustainable means of income and fostering long-term resilience and self-sufficiency.
To achieve this, we provide each widow with just five goats, which serve as the foundation for building a stable and independent livelihood. We recognise that proper livestock management is crucial to the success of this project, and we ensure that all participants attend a comprehensive two-day livestock training program. The program covers essential aspects of livestock management, including health and nutrition, breeding practices, and shelter and environmental needs. Through this structured training, the widows gain the knowledge and skills necessary to manage their herds effectively and maximise the benefits.
The impact of this initiative has been extremely successful in empowering widowed mothers and female heads of household to become self-sufficient and help them to break the cycle of poverty and dependency, as they are able to provide a reliable source of milk and meat, which can be used to feed their family and improve their nutritional needs. Additionally, the widows can generate extra income through the sale of breeding goats, creating an additional revenue stream that contributes to their overall economic stability. This financial independence not only improves the quality of life for these families but also fosters a sense of dignity and self-worth amongst the women.
In conclusion, the Widows Livelihood Project is making a tangible difference in the lives of widowed women and their children. By providing them with the tools and training they need to succeed, we are helping them to build a brighter future for themselves and their families. The success of this project demonstrates the power of sustainable, community-based initiatives in transforming lives.
We thank our partners, the Department for Livestock and local councillors in identifying eligible beneficiaries.
